DISASTER

On January 16, 2004, a fire broke out in an apartment at the Lutheran Homes of Oshkosh. Battling through freezing cold temperatures, firefighters were eventually able to extinguish the blaze. When the smoke cleared, 10 units had been completely destroyed, 16 units had heavy smoke and water damage, 12 units had moderate smoke damage and the remaining apartments had minor smoke damage.

Several senior citizens were displaced and wanted to get back into their homes quickly. We were called on to provide comfort, calm and expert consulting and construction services.

RECOVERY

Once we arrived onsite, we developed a management plan to expedite recovery. First, we restored the units suffering minor smoke damage so that occupants were allowed to return within just a few days. Then, we tackled the moderately damaged apartments. After carpet replacement, cleaning and repainting, 12 more units were ready for occupancy within 30 days. At the same time, selective demolition and rebuilding began on the heavily damaged units. Throughout the cold Wisconsin winter we managed to remove debris, rebuild structural walls, replace the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and more.

RESULT

Less than six months from the beginning of construction—July 4—all units were completed and reoccupied. Our team not only rebuilt the residents’ homes, we restored their way of life.

“ FROM THE DAY YOU ARRIVED ON THE SCENE, YOU GAVE US COMFORT KNOWING THAT EVERYTHING WAS UNDER CONTROL-FROM THE SCOPE OF SERVICES RIGHT DOWN TO THE FINAL PUNCH LIST.”
