DISASTER

One of this nation’s largest hail storms blanketed the city of Jackson, MS causing extensive damage to exterior finishes of major commercial facilities. One of which was the historical First Baptist Church located in downtown Jackson, MS. The uniqueness of the First Baptist Church is just not its age but rather its size; as the First Baptist Church covers 2 city blocks, and is located next to the state capital of Mississippi.

RECOVERY

The uniqueness of this structure was not only its size but also the materials used for the original construction. Hail damaged components included true slate roof shingles, copper valleys and trim, and various other modern-day commercial roofing materials. To further complicate this project was the pure safety aspect for both the public and repair workers. An ornate scaffold and safety system was designed for both the pedestrians and workers, coupled with the need to shut down streets around the church in effort to communicate materials to the roof surfaces.

RESULT

Though to complete this two city block; multi-type roofing project took just under 12 months, three impressive results took place. First the church lost know scheduled events throughout that year; second more important than the church being happy with the new roof, there were no safety or injuries as a result of this project; and finally GC3, along with Mandal’s roofing received the Mississippi Builders and Contractors 2014 Excellence in Construction Award for Exteriors and Roofing.

“ Everyone in your organization has been a pleasure to work with and we certainly appreciated everyone’s help and hard work in this replacement and restoration process.”
